CCTV 2《读书时间》节目采访：钟宜霖和她的处女长篇小说《阳光雨季》

This is my first ever TV interview, for my debut novel Sunshine and the Monsoon(published in 1995), interviewed by China Central TV Station in May 1996, when I was still a 19-year-old university student.

Below is the second time CCTV interviewed me five years later, in early 2002, and this was the last TV interview I had in China, a few months before I came to the UK in June 2002.

  昨天看到有个英国作家朋友说，她正在努力地改稿，因为她的出版经纪公司里有个大咖，改得不好可以直接毙掉签约作家的稿子。看得直接把我吓到了。所以在英国都已经签约了的作家，书稿还会被编辑毙掉吗？还是作家必须要按照这个大牌编辑的要求修改才能通过？ ​ 我没有在英国出版过书，完全不知道欧美的出版规则。但是我在中国出版处女作的时候，当时我 16 岁，把手写的书稿放到中国少年儿童出版社编辑部的桌子上就走了，因为当天值班的编辑不在。后来编辑连夜读完我的手稿，立刻打电话给我妈（那时还没有手机，给出版社留的是我妈上班的办公电话），要跟我见面。于是我跟我妈去出版社见责编和编辑部主任，她们俩跟我说了一车话（我一句话都没说）以后，就直接跟我说要我签出版合同了。当时我就是个高三的学生，正在被即将来临的高考吓得半死，屁都不懂，除了写小说啥都不知道，莫名其妙地就签约了。而且整部十几万字的长篇小说，一个字都没让我改，最后出版出来的书几乎跟我交去的手稿完全一样，编辑唯一修改的地方就是删去了小说中 “我” 和哥哥的一段对话。 ​ 我的意思是，如果当年 16 岁的我碰到哪个牛皮哄哄的大咖编辑，签完出版合同以后还要求我必须这改那改的，我可以 100% 地确定，我这部小说是绝对不可能出版的了。因为当时的我根本受不了这种折腾。相反，当年出版我处女作的那两位女编辑，恰恰是在见到我的时候对当时还只是个高中生的我一顿猛夸。责编说她是一口气看完的，编辑部主任则大大地表扬了我那个小说的中心思想（也就是现在说的三观），两人都是对我各种的鼓励，才让我这个初出茅庐的中学生得以出版了这部我在高考几个月前每天晚上在宿舍熄灯后点着蜡烛写出来的长篇小说。 ​ 我去年的英国前男友（一个物理博士）在听说我高中就在中国发表并出版了小说以后，曾经义愤填膺地批评英国的文化系统，说在英国根本不可能出现这样的少年作家，因为英国都根本没有鼓励小孩写作的这些机构和渠道，等等。听得我一头雾水。所以我并不是想拍国内出版社和少儿杂志的马屁，而是，看到在英国已经成名的成年人作家都要被经纪人和出版社这么折腾，我才感到自己当年真是太幸运了。或者说，至少在当时，三十年前的中国，对中学生小作者们的培养环境，真是绝无仅有地得天独厚。那时候的中国几乎全民崇尚作家和写作，对作家的培养更是从小就有各种《儿童文学》、《少年文艺》。   ...

    Why Did Han Kang Win the Nobel Prize?   Yilin Zhong   Ever since Amazon discontinued the Kindle eBook service in China, I’ve been unable to access Chinese books published locally or translated into Chinese. To date, I've only read two short stories by Han Kang: " The Plant Wife " which she wrote at 27 and later expanded into the Booker Prize-winning novel " The Vegetarian ", and " Middle Voices " published in 2023 in The New Yorker . The reason I’m writing this article, despite having read only these two stories, is that since the announcement of her award, I've seen various discussions and literary reviews in major Chinese media that feel rather off-topic. OK, finally, it comes: In London (my latest published novel)

Apologise to all my readers who have been waiting for so long.. The publishing contract was signed in Feb last year when I was travelling in Sydney, south of the earth, the novel was signed to be published in August 2017, however it finally comes out just now, March 2018, plus even not yet now, as Amazon still needs 3 more weeks to get those books from my publisher and to send to readers. In the past six months when the publishing issue was taken on place for many unexpected reasons, trust me, I have fighted from the beginning to the end and even went through all senior positioned people such as the chairman of the PLC pulbishing house, however, I am sorry to say, my effort couldn't make any chances, and even made things worse: because right now what you can read from this book/novel, for the well known publishing censorship in China, there are more than 5000 words being deleted straight away from my original script, due to relating to some poitical and government movement (such...
